At 1:00 p.m. on November 27, 2019, the School of Foreign Languages welcomed the participants of the first Sailing Cup interpretation competition. The competition was open to the whole university and the enthusiasm of the students was very high. A total of 153 students, including 118 undergraduates and 35 postgraduates, applied and participated in the contest. The competition was held in 4 sessions in Room 128 of the Speech Classroom of the College of Foreign Languages, and each session had the same test content, which were both Chinese-to-English and English-to-chinese-to-Chinese-passage interpreting (cross-passage mode), and each audio was about 70 seconds long. The participants started interpreting immediately after listening to the audio of the competition, and the voice equipment recorded the interpretation of each participant in real time.
After the competition, a total of 306 valid audios were collected and scored and graded by three judges from the School of Foreign Languages, Chen Mei Yue, Li Guojiao and Liu Huidan. 35 winners were finally selected, including 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 16 third prizes in the undergraduate group, and 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes in the graduate group, as shown in the following two tables.
This contest not only provides students with a good opportunity to practice interpretation, but also helps teachers to better understand the current interpretation level of students, which is conducive to more targeted counseling and training for students in the future. We hope that this competition will further stimulate students' enthusiasm for interpreting and motivate them to reach higher goals in interpreting!
