As the first lecture in the series of lectures on academic frontiers and the 110th anniversary of the University of Foreign Languages, Professor Xie Tianzhen of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) gave a lecture entitled Facets of Translation and Translation Studies - Also on the Theoretical Connotations and Academic Prospects of Translation and Mediation Studies in the lecture hall of Foreign Languages Building in the afternoon of September 11. Vice President He Shaobin presided over the lecture, some teachers attended, and all postgraduates of Class of 2019 attended.
In the lecture, Professor Xie Tianzhen talked about his views and understanding of translation. Translation is the accurate and complete expression in one language of what has been expressed in another language in the inseparable unity of content and form. Through easy-to-understand examples, Prof. Xie gave us a deeper understanding of what translation is and how it should be done. During the lecture, Prof. Xie also explained the concept of creative rebellion. Creative rebellion refers to the deviation or even deviation from the source message when the receiver understands, interprets and transmits the source message. In translation, it refers to the deviation or even departure from the original message when the translator, the reader of the translation, and the receiving environment of the translation understand, interpret, and transmit the original message. Professor Xie also elaborated on the expansion of the field of translation research by translation studies. Translation studies has opened up a cultural turn in Chinese translation studies, demonstrating external studies beyond the text and beyond translation, and has made great contributions to the construction of translation studies as an independent discipline.
The lecture allowed teachers and students to get close to the famous scholars and keep abreast of the current cutting-edge issues and relevant research results in the academic field, while Professor Xie's profound knowledge and rigorous academic attitude also played a great role in demonstrating and promoting students and teachers, especially the majority of postgraduates, to concentrate on their discipline research.
