The 2019 Bridge English Course Program (4th session) between the University of Portsmouth, UK and Shanghai Maritime University concluded successfully on August 19. The program was mainly under the responsibility of the School of Foreign Languages, and various departments such as the Student Affairs Office, the Finance Office and the Logistics Service Center actively assisted in its operation.
In recent years, the cooperation between the University of Portsmouth and Shanghai Maritime University has become increasingly close. In order to facilitate the growing number of Chinese students to study at the University of Portsmouth, the University of Portsmouth and Shanghai Maritime University, after active negotiation, have been cooperating since 2016 to offer English training courses to provide intensive English training for Chinese students whose IELTS scores do not meet the entry requirements.
This year, the 4th PSE English course enrolled 85 students from various universities across China. Ms. Li Fang, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Program of Foreign Affairs Institute, was in charge of all the work of the training course. 5 teachers, namely Shi Yanyan, Nanfang, Liu Yang, Chen Lin and Li Fang, were instructors, and 3 teachers, namely Chen Xuejun, Zhao Quan and Li Kelong, were responsible for the daily management of the class. After nearly two months of intense study, all students successfully completed the course.
On the morning of August 19, the closing ceremony of the 2019 Bridge English Course was held in the lecture hall of the College of Foreign Languages. Zhu Yaobin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Li Lei, Marketing Manager of the University of Portsmouth China Representative Office, representatives of relevant teachers, all participants of the course and representatives of volunteers attended the closing ceremony together. The ceremony was hosted by Ms. Li Fang, Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Program Department of the School of Foreign Languages. Secretary Zhu Yaobin gave a speech first, expressing his gratitude to the teachers who had devoted themselves to the training during the summer, and fully affirmed the outstanding performance of all the students, and expressed his earnest hope for the students, encouraging them to keep their eyes on the world, have an eye on the motherland, seek progress in stability, cooperate and develop, and continuously improve themselves. On behalf of the University of Portsmouth, Manager Li Lei thanked the teachers and student volunteers of the School of Foreign Languages for their hard work, congratulated all the students for their successful completion, and reminded the students of some common problems in studying in the UK. The representative of the students, Ruan Fangjuan, gave a brief review of the training life, thanked the teachers of the School of Foreign Languages for their careful organization and diligent teaching, and looked forward to the students going beyond themselves in the future study. Finally, Secretary Zhu Yaobin, Manager Li Lei and the teachers of the course awarded the completion certificates to the students, and the teachers and students took a group photo together.
