From January 2 to 4, the College of Foreign Languages organized a social internship for English undergraduates of the class of 2017 at Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau. The internship was coordinated by Ms. Guo Haixia, Vice President of Teaching and Learning, Mr. Wang Xian, Head of Business English Department, and led by Mr. Song Zhiping, Zhu Haixia, Li Yi, Zhang Yun and Li Kelong in groups.
The internship mainly consisted of two parts. One part was to visit Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau to understand the maritime management mode and VTS center operation in its jurisdiction; the other part was to visit Yangshan Port Observation Platform to learn the operation mode and management concept of Yangshan Port automated terminal by overlooking the whole operation port area.
First of all, the students were led by the teachers to the exhibition hall on the first floor of Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau. The staff explained the development history, responsibilities and tasks of Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau, the institutional settings and the honors won in recent years, which gave the students a preliminary understanding of Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau. Then the students followed the staff to the VTS Center on the fifth floor of Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau. The full-time staff combined with PPT and VTS maritime management system to give a detailed introduction and operation demonstration of the situation in Yangshan Port area, and through a series of intuitive data let the students feel the leap-forward development of Yangshan Port maritime management.
Then, the students were led by the staff of the Maritime Bureau to the Yangshan Port Observation Platform. Standing on the viewing platform, the students could see the whole view of Yangshan Port. The densely packed containers were neatly arranged on the port operation pier, various cranes were busy running, and countless trucks were running back and forth, and everyone was amazed again and again. The Yangshan deep-water port project is the fruit of the wisdom and sweat of our builders. After witnessing the magnitude and grandeur of the Yangshan deep-water port project, we all felt proud of the completion of such an international deep-water port in Shanghai, which also strengthened the confidence and determination of the students to join the construction of international shipping center in the future.
This visit to the Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau brought the students not only the knowledge reserve and skills learning, but also the enrichment and perfection of their future plans, stimulating their expectation and enthusiasm for their future work, and laying a solid foundation for our college in the cultivation of relevant high-quality talents. The successful organization of the social internship of Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau promoted the communication and understanding between the two sides, and laid a good foundation for the subsequent contract between the college and Yangshan Port Maritime Bureau to establish an internship practice base.
