In the afternoon of December 26, Professor Zhang Brill of Shanghai Maritime University held an academic lecture entitled A Corpus-based Study of Topic Chains as translation shift in International Laws in the School of Foreign Languages. Vice Dean He Shaobin presided over the lecture, and graduate students of the class of 2018 attended the lecture.
First of all, Prof. Zhang Brill introduced the general flow and basic content of her lecture, in which she especially mentioned the translation of international maritime law, and gave several examples to illustrate it. Then, she showed the students a complete research process, including: research object, methodology, proof by example, and conclusion, which provided an example for the students to engage in academic research in the future. The whole study was not only limited to English materials, but also devoted to comparing Chinese and English, and using data analysis in statistics to enhance the credibility of the research results even more. Professor Zhang fully motivated the students throughout the lecture, and his very descriptive words were very in-depth and simple, making the originally boring and difficult research process easy to understand. In the final questioning session, the students spoke enthusiastically and exchanged their doubts about international maritime law and topic chain research with Prof. Zhang, and received constructive answers.
The lecture brought cutting-edge professional ideas to the students, broadened their minds and stimulated their enthusiasm to engage in academic research. The whole lecture infected the students and teachers in the audience with a strong academic atmosphere, and the lecture ended with a warm applause.
