After our Dean, Professor Zhang Yan, was involved, the University and Cardiff University began negotiations in 2021 and finally signed an agreement in March 2022 for a postgraduate 1+1+1 dual degree cooperation program, aiming at student exchange, faculty exchange and collaborative research. The program is open to postgraduate students enrolled in foreign languages and literature at Shanghai Maritime University and mainly includes Master's degrees in Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics, English Literature, Business English Studies, and Translation Studies.
On November 1, 2022, Cardiff University's university held a presentation for our graduate students. The meeting was attended by Professor Michael Handford, Head of Admissions Sian Benwell and Sarah Sherrington, Cardiff University, Anar Yeerjiang, a representative of current graduate students; Dean of the College of Foreign Languages Zhang Yan, Director of International Programs Liu Huidan, Foreign Affairs Secretary Wang Wenjing, and new graduate students of the Class of 2022.
Prof. Yan Zhang first shared her connection with Cardiff University - in August 2017, she went to Cardiff as a visiting scholar for a year of work and study, and was well and deeply impressed by both the academic atmosphere of Cardiff and the culture and natural beauty of the city, which prompted her to come up with the idea of matching the two universities. After returning to China, Professor Michael Handford was invited by Professor Yan Zhang to come to our university for a short period of time to give lectures and learn about the academic level and spirit of our students in the field while having academic exchanges. All these communication and exchange laid a solid foundation for the smooth development of the cooperation project between the two universities.
Professor Handford recalled his time teaching at the Maritime University and gave full recognition to our students. He introduced the basic information of Cardiff University, such as location and curriculum, and highlighted the four specialties that can be chosen in the cooperation program; Ms. Sherrington explained the requirements for applying this program; Anar Yeerjiang, a doctoral student, told us her feelings and experience of studying in Cardiff University. At the end, students who were going to apply for the program asked their questions, and the experts from Cardiff answered them one by one.
The presentation lasted for about an hour and a half, through which our postgraduates could better assess their compatibility with the program and directly help them to have a clearer and more accurate idea of their future study at Cardiff University.
